Happy Birthday Jaun Elia... An Exclusive Feature by Shoby

Happy Birthday Jaun Elia... An Exclusive Feature by Shoby

Jo guzaari na ja Saki Hum Se,
Hum ne woh zindagi guzaari hai.

December 14th marks the birth anniversary of the legendary Urdu Poet Syed Jaun Elia. Belonged to a literary family of Amroha (India), he was not only a poet but also researcher, scholar and philosopher.

Jaun Sb had poetry embedded within his blood and his words depict the same. Each and every couplet and poem he wrote brings a joy to his reader (read follower) even if they appear to be gloomy, dark and intense to others. He explored diverse aspects of life especially the mortality of life in a completely unorthodox manner.

He was unique, not only for his concepts but also for the execution of concepts. At times, he brings in front of us a universal phenomena in such a way that nothing looks easier than to understand it.

Hum to jee bhi nahi sakey ik saath,
Hum ko to aik saath marna tha...

And sometimes, he goes beyond the living world and breaks all the barriers in bringing something as novel as discovering a new universe:

ANBOH...

Aik basti hai,
Aadmi hain do.
Aik to main hoon,
Or ik doosra main.
Ghar se nikla hoon,
Dekhiye kiya ho.
Mohtaram, dekh ker chala kijiye.

Jaun sb belonged to that rare school of thought in which it is pertinent to have a continuous struggle and battle with own self. You will find self denial and selflessness at their best in his poetry.

Kis ko fursat ke mujh se behas karey,
Or sabit karey ke mera wajood,
Zindagi ke liye zaroori hai.

Having a unique psychology, he was different in every aspect be it romance or any other human emotion. The way he used to express his internal feelings is simply out of this world. Romance for him is not like what others think. Its about a very personal phenomenon and to cherish it, he used out of the box symbolism.

Aap mujh ko bohat pasand ai,
Aap meri qamees si jiye ga...

It is so unfortunate that people could not really understand this gem of an artist in his lifetime and only one book (Shayad) was published when he was alive. However, after living a "non liveable" life (jo guzzari na ja saki hum se), few other books (Yaani, Gumaan, Lakin, Goya and a collection of prose Farnood) were made available to the public.

I believe one article can never encompass the grand personality of this most diverse philosopher poet. So considering my words as a humble tribute for this one of his kind personality, I'll end up the discussion with one of my most favourite couplets of all times by Jaun Sb.

Yeh mujhey chaen kiyo nahi parta,
Aik hi shakhs tha jahan mein kiya...

Long live the legacy of Jaun Elia (Aulia- the saint, as many of his fans calls him so)
