Guidelines to Write Exceptionally Well- Special Article by Shoby

Guidelines to Write Exceptionally Well- Special Article by Shoby

As The Master Storyteller 2017 competition is announced, everyone has started brainstorming to write a masterpiece which may become their first step to the glory. But as E. L. Doctorow said, "Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader - not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.". I also believe that writing a good story is not an easy task to do but it also does not demands some rocket science as well. Here are my guidelines, few suggestions in fact, which may act as a helping tool for all the young emerging writers.

First & foremost, Write Your Heart Out- Choose a topic or a genre that inspires and excites you. If something can not excite you, how it is supposed to excite others.

Be Original, Write Original- Look if I want to read an established writer, I would directly go & find out something written by him/ her own self. I don't need to read a copy cat. So don't try to copy anyone else. Write what naturally comes out from within you. Adopt a style that defines "You", not something that makes you look like a clone of someone else.

Don't Re-invent the Wheel- Us ne xyz ke hath thamtey huey us ki ankhon mein ankhen daal ker kaha, "XYZ! Main tumharey bagher rehney ka soch bhi nahi sakt"... XYZ hath churatey huey sharma ker apna bara dupatta sambhaltey huey no do geyarah ho gai... Doesn't it sound so cheezy. Well this is a very serious advice. Avoid already tested & tried formula. Write something unique, something fresh, something new.

Read Before Writing- This is perhaps the most important tool for writing good. If you want to write good, read something better. If you want to write something better, read the best. More you read, better you can write.

Conduct Research- You must do the basic research before writing anything. Research is mandatory in order to craft or sketch your characters, places and events so that it may look realistic.

Write The Realistic- Obviously, writings are fictitious and bear no resemblance to anyone. My point is, unless you are writing a Sci-Fi fantasy, no one will like to read about aliens. So try to place relatable characters in relatable society.

So these were only a few of the guidelines that should be considered while writing. I hope, these prove to be helpful for you.

The Flash Season 1 (TV Series)... TV Show Review by Shoby

The Flash Season 1 (TV Series)... TV Show Review by Shoby

World has always been in danger since right from the inception of time and courtesy some baddies, people have always cherished those wonderful persons with supernatural abilities to come and rescue them. These super heroes may not exist in reality but the mere feeling of having them in the comics have always given people suitable dose of entertainment & hope. Many of the characters were formulated in the effort and The Flash is one of them.

In the year 2014, channel The CW started airing the TV version of this super hero series titled as The Flash starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen (Flash). The first season of the show consisted of 23 episodes. Series also saw Candice Patton as Iris West, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon / Vibe, Tom Cavanagh as Harrison Wells and Jesse L. Martin as Joe West.

The first season tells us how Barry Allen became The Flash. An experiment at STARS Lab initiated by Dr Wells along with his team of scientists goes wrong and results in the particle acceleration which ultimately effects some persons and leave them with super powers & abilities. These persons effected by particle acceleration were termed as Meta-Humans and one of these meta humans was Barry who gets super sonic speed and becomes The Flash.

Barry finds other Meta Humans with the help of Dr. West, Cisco, Dr. Snow and the police detective Joe West and fights them as they become dangerous for Central City. In the background, it is explained that Barry's mother was killed by some lightening man (aka Reverse Flash) when Barry was a kid. Unfortunately Barry's father was held responsible of killing his murder and had to serve a life long punishment behind bars. Barry's ultimate objective is to find who was the actual killer of his mother in order to get justice for his father.

Highlight of the season was the points when we gets to know who the Reverse Flash is in actual. The twist gave me goose bumps when the future says something existence of The Flash. The finale part of the season was also interesting as The Flash does what he was (apparently) not supposed to do.

Overall story line of the show was fantastic with every new episode coming up with a short novel story of its own. As far as acting is concerned, every one was almost flaw less. As it was a sci-fi action series, you can expect some heavy dose of scientific reasoning & concepts and I seriously liked it. The show has a bit of resemblance with Fringe in a number of aspects.

Breaking News... Nemrah Ahmed's Next Mega Novel Announced

Breaking News... Nemrah Ahmed's Next Mega Novel Announced

She stunned us with the beauty of her writing earlier on. You cant deny the fact that she is perhaps one of those very rare writers of our age who leaves strong impacts on the readers by sprinkling the magic of her writing. If you ask me how I consider Nemrah Ahmed different from others then I must say there are some pertinent focal points that are the highlight of her writing prowess.

She chooses a different topic, nourishes her characters beautifully, comes them out of age dynamically, uses stunning master pieces in form of one-liners, develops a never read before plot and bowls you over by depicting even the minute of the scene detailing in the narrative. Along with some serious debates over the socio-political issues, we also get to read & learn many beautiful stories from the divine book QURAN PAK in her novels. Best part of her writing is, she never looks preachy but always teaches us useful lessons for this life & the hereafter.

I felt Mus'haf as a master piece. Then I read Jannat ke Pattay and thought well Mus'haf was just a beginning for her. Almost 2 odd years ago, I started reading Namal and till the date (March 3, 2017), I am pretty sure that she has written one of the cults of Urdu digest history but looks like Nemrah has no stopping for sure, as she is all set to enchant all of us with a freshly baked new cuisine, the title of which is still under covers. (Keep on guessing... Ha... :-) )

Nemrah's next will be featured in monthly Urdu digest Khawateen and will commence April 2017 onward.

I am super excited and I know all of my readers are more than excited on the news as the immensely talented & popular writer Nemrah is yet again ready to serve us with the rightful volume of wisdom, knowledge, entertainment & chills.

Along with Nemrah, I am also fastening my seat belts for another challenge. Challenge for Nemrah would obviously be to surpass the hopes of her regular readers and similarly the challenge for me is to review the things in a much better & interesting way. Readers have loved my reviews on Namal and I shall try to exceed the expectations this time. You will get to read the episodic reviews of Nemrah's next exclusively on this blog. So never miss to hit #Shobywood for much more.

I hope the upcoming one comes out as even better than the best of what she has written in the past. I am keeping my fingers crossed while all you are most welcome to keep on thinking what next is soming up with... #HappyWaiting

Bharam (Aymal Raza)- Story Review by Shoby

Bharam (Aymal Raza)- Story Review by Shoby

D.H. Lawrence said, “A woman has to live her life, or live to repent not having lived it.” (Lady Chatterley's Lover). Hasn't Lawrence explored a universal truth. Women are difficult to understand. Sorry, I should have said that this specie is immensely impossible to understand. At one point of time, they can be the the most dreadful of the entities who can devastate a generation of sorts and on another side, she would dare to do anything just for the sake of making her commitment tangible.

Aymal Raza has explored a general yet very interesting trait of the female fraternity in this short story. A women can take whatever difficulty she has to face in her life. She will go side by your side and will never make a complaint about anything bad coming in in front of her. She can bear any unprecedented incident in the journey of life, be it poverty, sickness or anything, however there is one oint which is beyond her tolerance level. She can never tolerate the betrayal. Danka V. talked about the same, “What irritated me most in that entire situation was the fact that I wasn’t feeling humiliated, or annoyed, or even fooled. Betrayal was what I felt" (The Unchosen Life).

Zubaida's married life started in the way just like the normal relationships starts. With colours of happiness of present and hopes for bright future. After having laid major portion of life with each other, a good 35 years to count, she parted ways, the reason best known to her only as she was not willing to disclose what happened in actual and the finale discloses a reasoning which takes the story on an entirely different level. Aik bharam aurat ka hota hai or aik dawa mard ka... Mujh mein itni himmat n ahi ke usey be'parda karu... Lakin us ne mera bharam tor diya hai...

Divorce, this word itself is haunting and Zubaida's condition was saying it loud that she has been divorced by the husband. Sir sabz zameen per saem or thaur ka safaida nazar aney laga... Excellent depiction of a recently divorced shattered women. Band bazar ki tarha weeran or udaas aurat...

Women can never be predicted and you can never assume what they actually have in their mind. She left her husband, (Fine... Acceptable) but see what she was up to, Main un larkon ke paas her bhi giz nahi jaon gi... Khoon to apney baap ka hi hai un ki ragon mein bhi... This shows how badly hurt she was from inside due to the behavioural attitude of her husband.

Aymal's writing flourishes quite beautifully in the narrative and there are many interesting one-liners which can seriously be termed as "Proverbs". She delved into the personality of Zubaida not only as a faithful wife but she also discovered many more aspects of her life especially her being a mother and a sister.

While talking to Khurram, out of no where she asks her Kaun hai woh larki??? What a true rendition of how a mother can gauge what is going inside her own children. Similarly, see how she reacts as a sister, the volume of trust she shows for her brother, a reliance which she can never have on anyone else except her very own brother. She not only came straight to him but also tells him the factual cause of leaving her husband. Well done Aymal Raza.

On the whole, Bharam is a fantastic short read and I can confidently say that it has that typical Aymal's touch in it. Read the complete story on Aymal's recently launched story collection "Sooraj Ke Paar".

Birha Bahag Ki Meena (Sumaira Hameed)- Novel Review by Shoby

Birha Bahag Ki Meena (Sumaira Hameed)- Novel Review by Shoby

K. Asif 's Mughal e Azam, Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah and Sir Sanjay Lella Bhansali's, Devdas, Saanwariya & Bajirao Mastani. To me, if anything deserves to be called as a cinematic gem, it is just these movies. To me, they are the ones who have really achieved the cult status in terms of film making in the history of Indian film industry. The films have really changed the way how the films were being made..

Let me halt the discussion on other three movies for some other time and let us focus on the 20th Film-Fare winner Pakeezah. Aap ke paon bohat haseen hain... Inhain zameen per na utaiye ga, meley ho jaey ge. Whenever I watch the movie, it gives me chills, the real goose bumps. I can never forget the sequence where Salim renames Sahibjaan as Pakeezah and she runs away having millions of different thoughts in her mind. If Mohey Panghat is one of my most favourite choreographed song then Thaarey Rahiyo is also in the same list.

So whenever I watched Pakeezah, to me it acted as one of the most brilliantly executed tragedy in Bollywood courtesy an awesome screenplay, a realistic art direction, some not seen before choreography, serene lyrics, grand musical arrangements and above all out of this world bravura performances by the leading cast especially Meena Kumari.

No, this review is definitely not on Pakeezah, however this brief introduction was mandatory to acquaint you about what Pakeezah is to me as a film and once again Sumaira Hameed has come up with an idea which no one else as yet has dared to explore in the digest history of Pakistan.

Writing a biography of a famous personality is not an easy task to do. And the bigger challenge arises when you are writing the larger than life character of someone who actually lived in the world and that too in a novel form. It may needs an entire long book to encompass the life of this celebrated actress. I must say that Ms. Sumaira is the bravest of hearts who took the challenge of penning the Tragedy Queen of Bollywood Meena Kumari's life within a few pages.

Birha Bahag ki Meena is a story that girdled the life time journey from Munna to Meena Kumari. The poor girl who was born in a family of struggling artists. Whose mother & sisters were all struggling actresses and father was a gem of a musician who was in search of that one big opportunity. And her father was all set to leave her on the doorstep of a orphanage. Jurm, wajood mein ana...

Mahjabeen (Munna) who lost her childhood inn the darkness of poverty started acting in smaller roles in her childhood. She was not allowed to play as other children of her age do, so she started collecting stones on the sets of the films and considered them her companion.

She never wanted to act but fortune has written something else for her. With the passage of time she started proving her acting prowess but again she never wanted to be the big thing in glitz & glamour world. She was a pure artist, the one who treats the work as the most sacred thing. Main ne to kabhi amar honey ke khawab nahi dekhey... Bus mera fun buland ho jaey...

And then she fell in love with a well known writer Kamal Amrohi, who when praised her beauty, she became The Beauty in real sense. Woh khamoshi se geet ho gai... Tum ne "us" ko "un" ker ke usey mehram ker diya... Ah... Serene

I feel Sumaira Hameed took a great volume of risk in choosing this topic as if even a minor of hte things goes wrong, you simply loose the path but how should I praise the beauty of her writing. She never made us feel like we are reading life story of a celebrated actress who has won multiple awards.

While reading Birha Bahaj ki Meena, you carry on your journey with the character of Munna and you seriously start feeling the same as she (the actual Mahjabeen) would have felt while going through the whole. She used to write a diary and interesting part is, you will find the mood of diary quotes getting changed with the change in her life times.

The writing of Sumaira is at its peak when she makes you stand in front of those two love birds who ultimately parted the ways. I honestly felt like watching a class theatrical act or a Bollywood tragedy especially while reading the dialogues like Titli ke paron ko hathon mein masal ker tum kehtey ho main bad'chalan hoon... Tumhari mohabbat zehar ban ker meri rooh mein mein dor rahi hai or tum kehtey ho main ghattiya hoon...

Sumaira this time made us visit the inside of Bollywood Film nagri. As they say, all that glitter is not gold proves really correct here. I felt myself wandering on the sets of Pakeezah with living characters talking all around me. I felt like I was very much part of the same time who saw the making of this epic for 16 long years. Kamal Amrohi once said that he  he hoped to create a film which would be worthy of her as an actress, and worthy of the love he felt for her as a woman, whereas Meena Kumari regarded the film as Kamal Amrohi's tribute to her.

Birha Bahag ki Meena is not here to tell you what was right or wrong. It is not preachy and never tries to crack your mind about who does what wrong. I looked to it as a salute to love, a homage to passion, a respect to the world's most sensitive relationship. I am pretty sure that if anyone would have tell the story of Meena Kumari with utmost delicacy & authority, it was none other than Sumaira Hameed.

Sumaira's dialogues in this novel are absolutely stunning. Her use of Hindi dialect in this story made the happenings looks even more real. Let me tell you, that I consider Saanwarya as a painting in motion. And here I am announcing one more thing, Birha Bahag ki Meena, to me, is a poetry in prose.

Meena lost her life for the sadness of love and Sumaira has woven the actual emotional thread that made Mahjabeen, the Meena Kumari, the tragedy queen of Indian film industry.

Hussn ul Muaab Or (Saira Raza)- Episode 3 Review by Shoby

Hussn ul Muaab Or (Saira Raza)- Episode 3 Review by Shoby

It is not very often that I get stuck in the very first scene of an episodic novel. Husnul Muaab Or is different. By stepping inside the other side of the wall, we witness a bigger extravaganza waiting our eye sight. Muslim Munna is all set to tie the knot with none other than Christian Maria in a Masjid and this is all but good for the bride's family.

The way Saira Raza has compared Maria's mother situation with blind, mute & handicapped cat, a deer standing in front of a lion ready to swallow her fawn and a feather headed dove just about to fall, is simply out of this world. Woh aik maa ka chehra tha... Dunya ki sab se bebus makhlooq...

She made us look two altogether diverse side of stories in one single frame. At one side, there was a happy contented family where everyone including Khadeeja, Maria and Munna were considering themselves blessed for becoming a source of converting a non Muslim into a Muslim, whereas on the other side, Maria's family is seriously thinking of being cursed as GOD might have left them for something like infinity.

Yeh asman bhi un ke gham mein barabar ka shareek tha... Or Maria usey baarish ki awaz jaltarang lag rahi thi...

Effortlessly, Saira's words are soothing as ever:

Maria ne wohi alfaaz duhraney shuru ker diye they, jo nijaat ka bais hain... (Subhan ALLAH... Beshak).

You know what... there is another type of pride which we do not realise and which flows in all of us, the pride of being the modest one. It is rather irritating to notice that the most down to earth persons, the ones who really think they are nearest to ALLAH sometimes fell in the prey of Satan and start developing a pride of humbleness. Same is the case with Khadeeja who was fortunate enough to be a Muslim by birth and Maria was unfortunately not a born Muslim, rather she selected the religion for her.

The dilemma is, we do not accept the converted Muslims as pure & complete in their religious views & characters as ourselves. Maria has learnt the Bible by heart and this one thing is enough for Khadeeja to have enormous volume of doubts regarding her religious beliefs. Commendable job indeed by Saira for picking up a very delicate topic and treating it with utmost honesty & sensitivity. Exceptional writing indeed.

He is still stuck in the desert and he is ready to die of hunger, thirst & the worst of all, the loneliness & helplessness. He is in one such condition where man finds himself standing in front of the one and only ALMIGHTY ALLAH. I feel, he is about to change. He will surely be rescued even in the worst of these conditions but he will come out of the catastrophe as a completely modified personality.

Now the story of Musa B is getting real interesting. He works with a new comer Soha Khan in the next video and this has not gone well with his earlier partner Sheher'zaad. However she thinks of taking him in confidence again and extend a hand of friendship which he welcomes warmly. After all, it is all about self survival for her.

Yet another engaging aspect of the novel Husnul Muaab Or is obviously the tale of the lead protagonist. The Gang of Girls is trying to clear Husnul's mind but she has one thing which makes her stand out in the folk. She is all belief... Non shake-able belief that ALLAH will surely answer her prayers...

Jis ALLAH ne, jis Maalik ne mujhey us ki janib matwajah ker diya... Main usi se usey kiyo na maang lu???

Husnul is in search of a dua, a wazeefa... Any thing that can bring Musa B in her life and Abdul Mubeen has given her the lesson of the life...

Dua ki qabooliyat ke liye eham cheez niyat or talab ka ka sacha hona zaruri hota hai...

Neem ke pair per gulaab khil janey jaisi dua... Ahhh... The beauty of writing... Stunner indeed. ..  In this episode, Nana jaan's character has emerged with the whole lot clarity for the very first time and it is pleasantly surprising... The conversation between Nana & Husnul is awesomely soothing.

So, Husnul is now head to toe all obedience as she now wants Musa B at any cost and there is only ONE who can help her in her cause...  ALLAH ALMIGHTTY.

Kal ki uktaahat, apni gharz ki khatir lagaawat mein badal gai... See, how mean we human beings are in the nature. We can do anything for our own personal gains. Anything... I repeat....

In the flashback, due to their busy schedule, cannot give Badar ample time. So his parents hire an atheist Philip as a caretaker for the growing Badar but this was not at all a very good decision as far as morality is concerned. After the death of Philip, he meets Scarlet who went on to define the rest of his life.

Us ki naazuk ungliyan jaam banana janti thi... Us ne baqi sari zindagi BadrudDin ke hathon se paimaney ka kaam liya... Wah...

And although Badar knew she was not good for him but he still cannot afford to lose her:

Woh mera cancer zada haath tha..

At this part of life Mohiy-un-din have realised that they themselves were the whole solely responsible for the drastic life of Badar and they wanted Sami not to become something like his father and he has surprised him. He wants a girl a totally opposite of what his mother was.

I really do not want to be a spoiler but let me give you my own personal take to this. I get a feeling that Sami, the person lost in the desert and the celebrated musician Musa B is same and the prayers of Husnul will be answered positively but I really don't know where it all heads to. (I may be totally wrong in my predictions and I take no responsibility for whatever is coming up next) :p

Nevertheless let me tell you honestly, Saira Raza achieves 10 on 10 for this episode. Such an exceptional depiction of some serious dose of melodrama that was all pertinent to move the story. I enjoyed each & every sentence of this episode and literally wanted to quote almost every master stroke penned by the writer. The wedding scene of Munna & Maria, the scene featuring Husnul and gang of girls and the conversation between Husnul and Nana were the highlights of the whole episode.

It has been so long that I was looking for one powerful writing and I believe Husnul Muaab Or Episode 3 has never disappointed me. Way to go Saira...

Sheher'Zaad (Saima Akram Choudary)- Episode 3 Review by Shoby

Sheher'Zaad (Saima Akram Choudary)- Episode 3 Review by Shoby

With the third episode of Saima Akram Choudary's Sheher'Zaad, we have seen a nicely developing melodramatic plot and the good thing is, within just three instalments almost everything is looking like settling down quite smoothly.

The road hit accident of Barrister Mahmood's son has now started showing the ugly side of the picture and Rumi who used to be an exclusively independent care free girl is now under real heat of terror. A little quarrel grows between Haroon & Ms. Tina over Rumi's misadventure and as usual You Shut-up is the last call from the both ends to have a seize fire.

May be PSL fever was all over on the #GangOfGirls as well and this is why one of the out of the park shots helped the ball to hit right on the box held by Hadi, which had the home made food prepared by his dear mother... Unfortunately, it had no other chance but to fell down. No points for guessing that it has only helped in the increase in the anger for this angry young man. And if this was not enough, result has arrived and just like what Doctors say in front of an OT, Sorry, the good luck is no more with the girls :p

To commemorate the failure of each other, a Sham e Gham was organised by the head goon in her room. Everyone is confessing the reason behind their failure and Dur-e-Shehwar thinks that she has got failed in exam just due to the curse of Hadi.

Tina gets Rumi bailed out courtesy Saif ur Rahman but situation is still not totally under control as Barrister Mahmood is leaving no stone unturned to validate severe punishment to Rumi.

Sandal moves to Noor Mahal and Wahaj is all devilishly happy. Why not he, as he has got all what he needs. Needless to say that he has used the chance to fulfil the dirty needs.

The unknown caller has once again proved to be the real help for Sherry. Hum'zaad suggests Sheher'Zaad to plead Rumi's case in court by herself and prove her innocent. Tina has already decided to hire  Barrister Aliya so Sherry decides to assist her in the case.

James Dashner writes in The Scorch Trials, “I felt her absence. it was like waking up one day with no teeth in your mouth. you wouldn't need to run to the mirror to know they were gone”. Same is the case with Anabiya, as she quotes in her diary, "Mohabbat ke safar mein akela honey ka ehsaas dunya ke her ehsaas se zeyada jaan'lewa hota hai... Through the newspaper, she came to know about the alleged affair of her father with a singer and naturally she became sad but Burhan comes forward to sooth her just for a mere while.

Mehboob ke samney nazren jhukaney mein kitna lutf at hai... Ahhh... This one particular moment had a magic but the magic never last long so the same faded away within few nano seconds as Burhan was talking with a girl in a very pleasant mood and it has not went good with Anabiya.

Time for Dur-e-Shehwar to shift the gears and get modified as Cupid has thrown the first arrow. Amidst of dense woods, she was rescued by none other than Hadi in a veruy dangerous situation. As expected earlier and predicted centuries backshe has surely developed a warm feeling for him.

Although SheherZaad is supposed to be a long lengthy novel the pleasant thing is, it is not boring the readers at least in the first three episodes. To me, this was the perhaps the best episode of the whole novel so far. Saima is making the story move ahead in a brisk mode and she is trying to keep the things simple as well as interesting.

Pakistan Super League Concludes... Wins Hearts- Special Edition by Shoby

Our land was desperate for cricket. Our nation was waiting anxiously for this one moment and ALHAMDO LILLAH March 5th, 2017 witnessed Pakistan celebrating the return of cricket in our very dear homeland, when Quetta Gladiators took on Peshawar Zalmi for the biggest bonanza of Cricket i.e. HBL PSL 2017 Finale.

It is one of those rare moments when questions like which team won or which player played the better cricket do not matter at all. It was a simple equation. Pakistan was playing against terrorism and at the end of the day, By the Grace of ALMIGHTY ALLAH PAK, we the Pakistanis have won... Cricket has won... Pakistan Super League has won and ultimately it is the victory of Pakistan.

PSL Final saw a handful of foreign players participating and without any doubt, these players especially the captain of Peshawar Zalmi Darren Sammy made the event a huge success. And it is not about the final only, the whole tournament was a wonderful success, much more successful than the edition one of PSL courtesy super performances & entertainment provided by the foreign & domestic players along with the commentators and hosts.

As already committed by the PSL Chairman Mr. Najam Sethi, PSL 2 Final was meant to be played in Pakistan and this was a dream come true for this cricket crazy nation when houseful jam packed Gaddafi Stadium located in Lahore, Pakistan saw thousands of people from all over the country chanting just one slogan Pakistan Zindabad.

PSL closing ceremony featured some powerful performances by Ali Zafar, Farhaad Humayun (Overload) and Ali Azmat. When Sammy tried some dance moves on the stage, the crowd went crazy. Fans never hesitated taking selfies with their favourite players and the evening concluded with Peshawar Zalmi standing tall on the victory stand.

Although, it is too early to say that all is now well and everything is settled in terms of bringing international cricket back in our country but this one thing is for sure. The way people has welcomed the return of cricket was exceptional. I feel, this one game was mandatory to be played in Pakistan. The reason is pretty obvious. We just wanted to show the world how peaceful, fun loving and united we are as a nation and we reject, oppose & hate any sort of terrorism. Our message was quite loud. We love cricket and we want more & more international cricket in our country. And yes, we can arrange tournaments of this big scale.

I hope, we shall have an even bigger tournament with bigger cricketing stars from all around the world participating in the next season of Pakistan Super League.

At the end, I want to share my latest poem, which was written exclusively for PSL:

In Conversation With Zain Shakeel (The Poet)... Interview by Shoby

In Conversation With Zain Shakeel (The Poet)... Interview by Shoby

What an incredible age is this, where we are living. I mean if you have an internet connection, know a bit more of some nice Urdu phrases and have a gentle know-how of few software applications like Inpage and Photoshop... Congrats, you are a poet, ready to launch yourself in this almost limitless universe of social media. And I term these kind of poets "Facebookish Poets", who literally have no idea about what actually they are doing in the name of poetry.

Last year, while roaming around here & there on Facebook in search of some nice good poetry, I came across this couplet:

Kabhi aa ker inhain shafaaf ker de
Tere waadon pe matti jamm chuki hai

And I got freeze... Tere waadon pe matti jamm chuki hai, I mean wholesomeness of this unique idea compelled me to read this real poet some more and I hit the "Like" button on his official page and then I was almost in a state of pleasure quoted shock. I dont want to be looked as ugly & proud but I really believe that today's world is seriously facing a drought in terms of good Urdu poets but this one person has seriously modified my thoughts. Genuinity, uniqueness & delicacy of his thoughts & concepts amalgamated with unbelievably beautiful execution by him has no doubt made myself his fan. He is the author of an excellent book Chalo Udaasi ke Paar Jaey and many other great poetic pieces. He is none other than the favourite of many of us... The one and only Zain Shakeel.

Needless to say that Zain enjoys an excellent repute not only among the critics but in general public as well and he has a handsome number of of fans all around. This phenomenon is pretty much obvious from the number of fan made & operated poetry pages that he has on Facebook. I believe a world of is waiting to know what he actually thinks of about his own personality & his art (i.e. poetry).

I genuinely felt that almost all the fans of Zain wanted an insight about who the real Zain is and they really need a high dose of Zain's interesting chit-chat. So here I am bringing to you an exclusive interview of this one of the best poets of Pakistan. Enjoy the read and don't forget to comment in the below box:

Shobywood: Salam Zain... Please tell us something about yourself...

Zain: (A typical Zain-ish kind of reply)

"Main Wich Kon Qataar..."

Means myself Zain Shakeel... I belong to the village Jalal Pur Jattan which is situated in Gujrat. I was born & brought up there and also got the initial education from the same place. From Matriculation onward, I further studied in Lahore and by profession I am a Software Engineer.

Shobywoood: How did you started poetry?

Zain: Accidentally (Smiles)... It is said that poets cannot be made, they are poets by birth (by-default) and this reality is revealed at a particular time span of one's life and it may be a product of any reason. In my case, I remember, I found Mr. Farhat Abbas Shah's poetry book "Muhabbat Gumshuda Meri" in my relative's library. I started reading it and went on to read it quite easily. To be honest, I couldn't understand it much but ALHAMDO LILLAH, being a good student, my memory & recalling skills were good enough so that is why I used to read it in the same rhyming scheme and as I said earlier, poetry is embedded within oneself by birth, it just needs a particular time to be triggered. Same happened in my case. I started feeling that rhythm and I easily memorised the book and from then onward, sort of a liking for poetry started and it grew just like an tumour.

I continued reading Mr. Farhat Abbas Shah more & more and till I reached my Matriculation, I was almost done with classical poets like Ghalib sb,  Meer sb, Momin sb , Dagh, Atish, Zoaq, Bahadur Shah Zafar and many others. I read some modern poets as well and wrote an almost devastated sort of Ghazal in the 8th standard, however I seriously threw away the idea of writing after that. I never thought of doing poetry on serious terms at that time. However I started writing regularly in my university.

Shobywood: What is poetry for you???

Zain: Sometimes I feel, if I was not doing poetry, my existence would have been non existed. I mean, you may consider a stone in place of Zain Shakeel if you minus poetry from me.

Shobywood: Which poet inspired you???

Zain: My teacher respected Sir Farhat Abbas Shah sb & Mohsin Naqvi Shaheed. In classical poets, one & only Ghalib sb and in modern era, Shahbaz Ali Naqvi.

(PS: Readers, I was just bowled over when he uttered my name in the list of his favourite poets... Cant thank him enough) :-)

Shobywood: Zain, I have read much of your poetry. I feel, you have that incredible capability to depict innocent & sensitive emotions in an extremely delightful & unorthodox manner. What actually inspired or insists you to write with such delicacy?

Zain: Sadness... Sweet sadness of love, Inner sadness, External sadness, Sadness of being sad, in short it is just one damn emotion that compels me to write and this is sheer sadness. Every human being has to go through some happy & sad phases in life. However some people are more pro-sensitive on even minute of the things and it is an out of the world phenomenon if you are a poet. Nevertheless, there are carious colours of poetry but to me, sadness is the real happiness. And this very sadness urges me to write I don't know how many things and then it hand me over the sadness in the form of these literary words.

Shobywood: It is said that love is a mandatory phenomenon for poetry. What do you feel in this regard?

Zain: I believe, poetry belongs to love. I have not found even a single poet from the clan of those who have hate within themselves, those who are tyrants or heartless. Take this, sometimes a reader who is not a poet himself recites a poetry, he has some real emotions or feelings running somewhere parallel in the background. Some where his heart really melts. He must have been observing a sensitivity, a delicacy and above all, the love. Considering this, I believe if poetry is without love, it is a pseudo poetry, just the amalgamation of words & phrases. I don't consider it a poetry to arrange phrases & sentences by learning Ilm e Urooz. It is just like putting bricks on each other.

Shobywood: I have observed, one term "Sandal" is used may be hundreds of times in your couplets and poems. Please tell us the reason behind it.

Zain: (Smiling) Very interesting question. someone gifted me a pencil in my childhood which was made up of Sandalwood and it had an excellent aroma. I must say that I was in awe of that fragrance, in fact, I am still in love with that fragrance. Unfortunately I lost that pencil somewhere. I tried to track it down but couldn't find it again.

I couldn't found the pencil, however the fragrance stood within me and it still remain here. Fact is, I still use the perfume which has the fragrance of Sandal. The interesting part is, the fragrance which I developed the liking stays with me like a feeling. This is why I used the is word much often in my poetry.

Just to set the records, straight, let me clarify that whenever I use the word Sandal, I do not refer to a person. To me, it demonstrates the same feeling which I always tried to find and I found it even if it remained present somewhere near me or may be within myself.

Shobywood: In this age of mushroom growing social media, what is your stance about the "Facebookish" poets?

Zain: Honestly speaking, almost everyone is a poet, a presenter, a self proclaimed star here at Facebook. Times are changed now. No one bars you from doing anything. So everyone is doing whatever he or she wants to do and same is the case with the poets. Everyone is writing and sharing whatever he wants to, no matter how meaning less it is. I am not saying that everyone is bad here. In fact some of these new writers are fabulous, however their charm gets lost somewhere in this crowd.

Looks like everyone is running in a race and no one promotes any good stuff from others. I am sorry but I feel, hypocrisy & envy was always there but I believe, it is at its all times high in our age.

Shobywood: (Just taking liberty from what he said recently, we asked him). So Zain, do you think good writers are available now a days? If yes, why don't they come in front much often?

Zain: As, I have just said it, people want & strive to come forward but dilemma is they tend to bar the progress of next ones. It is absolutely fine, if someone wants to progress in a certain field and he should not be barred from doing so. But people do stop others. This is why, good writers are declining.

Shobywood: General public has almost stopped reading poetry. Is it because of the scarcity of good poets or due to the lacking of good audience?

Zain: No, I don't think so. People do read poetry in this age as well and perhaps they are now in pretty good numbers. However, the major problem is that there is a plethora of poets in this field today. You may find hundreds of poets within a small society. So where should a good reader go.

In this crowd, there are many good writers who fade away in the course of time. This age is full of cleverness and in this era, those simple poets who don't want any celebrity status are doing their own job while being in a veil and their simplicity sometimes becomes a pertinent reason of their disappearance. This is what I feel regarding today's world of poetry.

Shobywood: Masha ALLAH, you are quite famous among the general public and you enjoy a handsome volume of fan following as well. But you don't appear in Mushairas too often. why is it so?

Zain: I have attended a couple of programs but I observed there is much grouping & lobbying even in a single program. Every particular group is just appreciating the poets belonging to their particular group only and leg pulls the other group members.

The thing you may visit anywhere, no more are the days where we used to have house full public presence in the programs and people used to listen to their favourite poets with zeal & excitement. Now, you will see 20 persons attending the program and most of them are poets themselves. General public has lost hte interest. These poets reads their own poetry in front of other poets and even in this declining phase, the atmosphere is full of hypocrisy, grouping & lobbying.

I would love to attend a Mushaiara where number of general public would be higher than he poets.

Shobywood: Please tell us something about your published books?

Zain: I have published only one poetry book titled as "Chalo Udaasi Ke Paar Jaey" in the year 2015 and after that I could not get ample time to publish the other stuff.

Alhamdo LILLAH, I have almost 20 books already drafted which comprises of Nazm, Ghazals, Taweel Nazm, Azad Ghazal, Nasri Nazm and Seh'Misri Nazm.

Shobywood: Your poetry has the feel of that classic poetry amalgamated with a touch of sufism. What do you say?

Zain: Poetry of a person depicts, whatever he feel internally & spiritually. I have a special liking for the saints since my childhood and above all, I have the highest level of love, respect & regard for Prophet MOHAMMAD (saww) and HIS AAL e PAK (asws) PANJTAN PAK (asws). And this is their blessings that a colour of Sufism reflects through through my poetry.

Shobywood: Your Facebook Live show enjoys an immense liking. Do you have any plan to do radio FM programs or if there any invitation from a channel? W=If yes, what sort of program you will like to do?

Zain: I have my interest in literature only . I don't have any interest in fun & entertainment or politics. I have already received an offer from Lahore Chamber of Commerce Fm 98.6 for the program of Ghazal Time but I am unable to conduct it due to my domestic issues and continuous unavailability in Lahore. As soon as I shift to Lahore, I shall commence the program for sure. That's why I regularly do my own show on Facebook to keep in touch with my listeners.

Shoywood: You have also tried in a relatively different genre of poetry i.e. Azad Ghazal. How you see this genre?

Zain: To me, Azad Ghazal is simply an ongoing condition a frame of mind actually. To be honest, a large number of poets dont endorse this genre as far as creativity content is concerned. They say, we don't have any Qafiya or Radeef, you just keep on writing whatever floats in your mind by just keeping the Behar intact. However, I feel every single couplet of an Azad Ghazal is a revelation and it is very much pure & original. You don't need any Qafiya here. And the best part is you don't even have to think it before writing. I have observed that the pure thinking comes out quite categorically transparent in this genre of poetry.

Let me quote a simple example to give my point of view a more clarity. If we scold a child for doing something, either he will rebel & become worse or he will produce sort of a a fright within himself and it will ultimately impacts him in a bad manner. On the other hand, it we treat him with some good behaviour & independence, it will surely produce better results. Same is the case with Azad Ghazal. If you make the Ghazal free of the limitations of Qafiya Radeef, it emerges out shining with diverse colour & ambience. It should not include any filler couplet.

Shobywood: Its not easy to pen a long poem (Taweel Nazm). You have written epics like "Maaham". What do you say about it?

Zain: I think, poem writing is more difficult than writing GhazalPoems are far more tricky in their nature. To me, there is no formula for writing a poem. Some one asked me, Sir, how to write a beautiful poem? I replied, by just indulging into it... By just disappearing & drowning in the phenomenon.

You write a poem when you are captured in a phenomenon, a specific condition of sorts and when it is impossible to return from the phase. Any kind of feeling like Pain, Sadness, Love, Anticipation may become  the basis of it. In these scenarios, the words you create emerge to be known as a poem. When the feel is unanimous, the symphony & continuity of the poem remains uniform. This is the identity of a pure, true poem.

Especially you talked about poem "Maham", I feel, that particular condition was so long lasting that I created the poem mere by indulging deep into it and as a result, Maham the poem came in to being.

Shobywood: You have written in Punjabi as well as in Urdu. In which language you like & prefer to do poetry?

Zain: I love both of the languages. Punjabi has its own charm and so does Urdu. Apart from this, I try to read Persian as well. I wish to write in Persian & Siraiki.

Shobywood: Do you like or have any plan to write lyrics for Dramas or Movies songs?

Zain: Yes, I have already penned lyrics of some of the songs. My songs "Main Piyar" sung by Sam Salamat Ali Khan is already released and many more are just about to be launched.

Shobywood: What are your future plans in the field of poetry?

Zain: I am working on poems. Insha ALLAH, I shall present new things in very different styles. The same will surely reach to you. Please keep on praying for me.

Shobywood: Which helpful tips you may provide for the upcoming poets?

Zain: I feel reading is much more important than learning the know how of Behr and Auzaan. You cannot write anything new unless you are well aware of your own cultural heritage. Rules & regulations of poetry comes far ahead, first of all it is mandatory to read the best of literature.

Shobywood: Any message you want to deliver for your fans?

Zain: Always remember me in your prayers. Just pray that I continues writing all through the whole journey of my life. And I really pray right from the bottom of my heart for all my fans.

Shobywood: Anything you want to say about my blog Shobywood, considering it the only blog in Pakistan which caters Hollywood, Bollywood, Lollywood along with the literature as well.

Zain: Shobywood is an excellent source of information. I have observed it the only one blog where you always try to do innovative stuff. Many people operate blogs but 90% of these blogs are mere copy paste material and you will find nothing new in these blogs, whereas the biggest plus of Shobywood is whatever topic or article you choose & write, it is always fresh, news & unique and this one thing makes the blog prominent. I always pray for your success and I wish more & more people get benefit from your blog :-)

On this note, we Thanked Zain Shakeel for giving his very crucial moments of his busy schedule. We wish him a great shining luck for all of his future endeavours.
