Bajirao Mastani- Movie Review by Shoby

Bajirao Mastani- Movie Review by Shoby

4.5 Hearts out of 5

A lesser known fact is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali concieved the idea of making a film on the love story of warrior poet Peshwa Bajirao Ballar even before making his debut direction Khamoshi- The Musical. With the passage of time, conditions kept on changing and he became busy in doing other projects, however somewhere in his mind, he was eager to cinematize this story. From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Katrina Kaif, Bhumika Chawla and a few others, there came many artists for various roles belong to the project but nothing materialized until he found his Bajirao in Ranveer Singh, Mastani in Deepika Padukone and Kashi Bai in Priyanka Chopra.

Late it came, better it became. So Bajirao Mastani is yet another SLB signature in which Sanjay Leela Bhansali is written all over. Starting from the script. Ten on ten for such a solid punch, with dialogues depicting all the beauty at their best.

Aap ne to sirf Waar ka nishan dekha hai Peshwa... Ghao to kahi or laga hai". What a way to depict her love for Bajirao. Humarey wapis aney ke baad bhi aap ki ankhon se gaya nahi... Humara intezar". Telling how deep Bajirao could look in Kashi Bai's heart. Aap ki di hui her cheez humain aziz ha... Chahey ghungru hon ya Beta." Just spot on.

Check one of the most stunningly shot sequences where Kashi Bai first time saw the reflection of Bajirao in the curtain. See the rage of Bajirao shown though the stormy night's voyage. Fell in love with the scene where Bajirao and Mastani confess love for each other and make a commitment. And that fountain scene, where SLB has shown the eternal emotion of love in an altogether different module.

One of the best parts of the movie was the scene where Nanah separates Mastani from her son. What an exceptional conversant between mother & son. Check at hte concluding parts, where Kashi Bai comes to beat Bajirao and in his unconsciousness, he considers him to be Mastani and asks about Kashi Bai, she says: "Ab to pathar se dil ka kaam leney lagi hai". The very last imaginary fight sequence where Bajirao battles with invisible enemy (his own self) Just fabulous... Mind boggling.

Bajirao Mastani is without any doubt the best work of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Although Deepika & Priyanka excel beautifully but to me, it was a show stolen completely by Ranveer Singh. Bhansali sb has re-discovered this gem of an artist. His accent (with a blend of Marathi), his graceful gate of an emperor, his grandeur of a warrior, his emotions as a lover. Bhansali sb has tapped his real acting skills.

Deepika Padukone outshines in the role of Mastani Bai, the class & grace she carries in the whole movie is just phenomenal. Scenes featuring her sword actions are choreographed with such a great precision & authenticity.

Priyanka Chopa is yet another gem stone in the forehead of movie. Watch her unmatched elegance in the role of Kashi Bai. In some places, she simply takes the middle of the stage, especially the very last sequences. She did not acted, rather lived the character.

Special mention is due for Tanvi Azmi, who has played Bajirao's mother in such a convincing manner. All of these actors bind with their flawless performances and you can never even blink an eye for the whole time period. You do not want this movie to be finished, even after it ends. Such a power of Sanjay Lela Bhansali.

Art directions, set designing, choreography, editing & other technicalities of cinema have always been up to the mark in SLB's products and Bajirao Mastani is no different. I must say that every frame of Bajirao Mastani is poetic in terms of cinematic credentials & sensibilities. Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography is breath taking indeed specially in war sequences.

Although movie does not feature many of the songs, which are available in the album (may be because of editing), however still Deewani Mastani, Albela Sajan, Mohey Rang Do Laal & Pinga are winners in every sense. I literally missed Ayat, Aaj Ibadat and Fitoori in the movie. Had they been included in the proceedings, it would have been a magnum treat for the viewers.

Although climax & anti climax could have been much better. Having said that I would still say that with the career best performances of Ranveer, Deepika and Priyanka, Bajirao Mastani will glow as a shining star in the sky of Bollywood. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has nailed it yet again and proved his mettle. Watch it for two and half hours of sheer dream and cinematic poetry.
